Modeling of the Hydroplaning Phenomenon

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Hydroplaning is a unique phenomenon in which the water on a wet runway or highway is not displaced from the nominal tire-ground contact area by a rolling tire or by a moving but nonrotating (full-skidding) tire at a rate fast enough to allow the tire to make contact with the ground surface over its complete nominal footprint area, as would the case of operation on a dry surface. When hydroplaning occurs, the tire rides on a wedge or film of water over a part or all of its footprint area, depending on the conditions. This creates a situation where the vehicle experiences low (or near-zero) coefficient of friction and uplift forces in the fluid film capable to cause a loss of contact between the tire and the pavement. This causes a loss in braking ability and could lead to accidents.

Emerging insights into the dynamics of submarine debris flows

Recent experimental and theoretical work on the dynamics of submarine debris flows is summarized. Hydroplaning was first discovered in laboratory flows and later shown to likely occur in natural debris flows as well. It is a prime mechanism for explaining the extremely long runout distances observed in some natural debris flows even of overconsolidated clay materials. Moreover, the acceleration...

Augmented Lagrangian and penalty methods for the simulation of two-phase flows interacting with moving solids. Application to hydroplaning flows interacting with real tire tread patterns

The numerical simulation of the interaction between a free surface flow and a moving obstacle is considered for the analysis of hydroplaning flows. A new augmented Lagrangian method, coupled to fictitious domains and penalty methods, is proposed for the simulation of multiphase flows. The augmented Lagrangian parameter is estimated by an automatic analysis of the discretization matrix resulting...

Investigation of the Effect of Dimple Bionic Nonsmooth Surface on Tire Antihydroplaning

Inspired by the idea that bionic nonsmooth surfaces (BNSS) reduce fluid adhesion and resistance, the effect of dimple bionic nonsmooth structure arranged in tire circumferential grooves surface on antihydroplaning performance was investigated by using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The physical model of the object (model of dimple bionic nonsmooth surface distribution, hydroplaning model) ...
